Most frequent questions and answers
There is no certificate for the handstripping course, and this is for a few reasons.
Namely, this course is taken at your own pace. Since there is no exam, grading, or live classrooms, it is difficult for me to judge each student’s progress and award them a certificate of completion.
I should also note that in my experience as a groomer, online certificates do not hold much weight. Groomers and pet facilities prefer to see a portfolio of finished grooms or have you do a live demonstration to better judge your skills.
All that being said, if you ever need help or want to chat I’m always available.
I’m happy critique pictures or videos of your grooms, give career advice, or anything else grooming related.
Most Terrier Breeds and Wirecoated breeds are required to be hand stripped. If you are unsure you can see the full list of breeds here, or join the handstrip facebook group and post a picture of your dog to receive grooming advice.
Absolutely. We start at the very beginning and get you up to speed with the basics, and then walk you through full hand strips.
Not at all, I’ll take you step-by-step through the entire process, and I always assume you are starting from the very beginning.
We’ll walk you through the best practices for safety and comfort first before teaching you how to handstrip.
To get started with hand stripping you’ll need a few essential tools.
It’s possible to handstrip with just using your hands, but I highly recommend beginner and intermediate groomers make use of specific tools.
I recommend a set of stripping knives, carding knife, chalk, and a rake. We go over these in detail in the course.
Think of these as a valuable investment for saving time and providing the best possible results.
If you’re just grooming your pet at home you can handstrip on the couch, floor, bed, or wherever is comfortable. It will leave behind some hair so I recommend laying down a blanket or towel first. Or try hand stripping outdoors if it’s nice out.
Setters and English Cocker Spaniels require specific Carding techniques unique to those breeds (along with some scissoring).
This course is specific to handstripping wire coated dogs.
Since we do not cover the techniques required to groom Setters and English Cocker Spaniels, this may not be the course for you.
Schnauzers have a unique pattern that are hand stripped and also clipped / scissored.
While this course will prepare you for the hand stripping portion, we do not cover how to scissor or clip dogs.
